Utica, NY (03/27/2012) - Mary Malone McCarthy, successful businesswoman, writer and women’s advocate, will speak at Utica College’s Executive Lecture Series on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity building’s Carbone Family Auditorium.

McCarthy’s speech, “The Spirit of Entrepreneurship: Managing Business, Old and New,” will provide insight into how to effectively manage a business while embracing your entrepreneurial aspirations.

McCarthy, a resident of Clinton, has extensive business-leadership experience. She was the regional manager for the Olsten Corporation, a professional and occupational staffing business, responsible for the eastern and central areas of Upstate New York. She also served as the regional human resource director for Portola Packaging, an international plastics manufacturer located in San Jose, California, responsible for human resource functions for the company’s New York, Iowa and Illinois facilities.

Last year, McCarthy founded M3 Business Service Network, which provides clients with trusted business partners and services that advance their strategic initiatives.

Currently, McCarthy is senior vice president at Northland Communications, a full-service communications company with offices in Utica and Syracuse.

McCarthy is responsible for overseeing public relations, marketing and customer relations for the firm. This role allows her to work closely with Northland’s major customers to foster stronger partnerships, and address areas in which to further develop and enhance those relationships. Additionally, McCarthy is instrumental in strategic planning activities, laying the framework for the company’s continued success.

Along with being a respected businesswoman, McCarthy is considered a valued author. She was selected as a featured writer for a Hearst Publication’s “Women at Work” magazine, where she also blogs on life as working mother.

Outside of work, McCarthy is committed to donating her time and professional expertise to a wide variety of community organizations and events.

In 2007, McCarthy chaired the United Way Campaign and exceeded a goal to raise $3.7 million. An advocate for women in business, she founded the Women’s Roundtable, which facilitates events for female CEOs and senior executives. She is a co-founder of Accent on Excellence, which honored 10 young leaders who excelled in their professional work and commitment to the community. McCarthy has also served on the board of directors for the Stanley Center for the Arts, Slocum Dickson Foundation, and Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce.

In recognition of her achievements as a businesswoman, McCarthy has received the Women’s Business Council’s Young Careerist Award, and was honored by the YWCA for the Salute to Outstanding Women.

McCarthy earned a bachelor’s degree from Wells College.
The event is sponsored by the business and economics department of Utica College and is free and open to the public.
