Utica, NY (11/10/2011) - Utica College will host a discussion featuring Dr. Dennis and Mrs. Paula Lofstrom, members of the board of directors of International Health Partners, an organization that helps facilitate international partnerships with Tanzania to improve health care. Dr. Lofstrom and his wife, a licensed practical nurse, have also founded the Nyakato Health Clinic in Tanzania. They will speak at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14 in the Carbone Family Auditorium in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity Building.

The Nyakato Clinic has evolved from humble beginnings as a small, limited scope medical clinic, to its current operation as a health care center housing eye and dental care units, as well as a surgical room. Volunteers are completing work on a laundry facility, and the organization has secured donations for an x-ray machine and electric generator, three necessary components the clinic must obtain before it can be recognized as a hospital, an initial goal of the project.

Topics in the discussion will range from the current health issues faced by the rural, low-income families in Tanzania to the organization’s current project, a health care facility in the Mwanza area.

Future projects hope to provide a birthing center to combat the regions high maternal and infant mortality rate, as well as an orphanage to house the children of parents who have died from AIDS. Children in the orphanage will be supervised by older women who will be provided refuge from the rampant accusations of witchcraft in Tanzania.

The discussion is free and open to the public, and will provide a unique opportunity to gain insight into the culture of the Tanzanian people. More information about the Nyakato clinic and the International Health Partners organization can be found at their website, http://www.ihptz.org.
