Utica, NY (10/12/2011) - More than 2,500 alumni, family members, and friends from all over the country are expected to converge on the Utica College campus this weekend for the college’s traditional Alumni and Family weekend. This weekend will be highlighted by reunions, athletic contests and celebrity performances. Festivities kick off Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. with the men’s lacrosse alumni game and reception, followed by a casino night and carnival under the stars.

Events begin early Saturday morning as alumni reunions take place and campus organizations meet to reconnect old and new members and discuss upcoming and current initiatives. Members of the classes of 1949-1960 are invited to join members of the Class of 1961 as they celebrate their induction to the Golden Pioneers, a 50th Reunion luncheon hosted by President Todd S. and Mrs. Jennifer Hutton that happens to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the college’s transition to its current Burrstone Campus from Oneida Square.

Fans will then begin to fill Charles A. Gaetano stadium on Saturday as Utica College takes to the gridiron at 1 p.m. to face Hartwick in the annual homecoming football game, following a pre-game party & barbeque hosted by the National Alumni Council and sponsored by the Matt Brewing Company.

The carnival continues from 4 to 7 p.m. behind the Strebel Student Center before fireworks light up the sky at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday.

A familiar face will take to the Strebel Auditorium stage after the fireworks, this time as an alumna. Shanelle Gabriel, a 2006 graduate of UC and a singer and lyricist best known for her appearances on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam will let her vibrant personality shine through her words, stories, and melodies at her 9:30 p.m. performance. America’s Got Talent star Kenneth “Xclusive” Paryo, “the human robot,” will open for Gabriel. Saturday night’s events will wrap up with Pub Night, a UC tradition in the “new” Pioneer Pub.

Family and Alumni weekend events conclude on Sunday with the Alumni Awards Breakfast at 9:30 a.m. before the UC women’s soccer team hosts Skidmore at 1 p.m. at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

Mark Kovacs, director of alumni and parent relations, said that events such as alumni and family weekend have a huge impact on the local economy, adding that the event has led to the selling out of all local hotel rooms in the past few years.
Registration and information will be available in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge in the Strebel Student Center from 4 to 9 p.m. on Friday and again from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
