Utica, NY (04/28/2011) - Death and taxes hit everyone in their life, but for college students, there is one more thing to dread: the rising cost of textbooks. The UC Bookstore has taken this into consideration by working to find ways to ease the high costs of textbooks with a number of cost saving options."A college bookstore should have the goal of helping students with their education any way that it can," said Lauren Partyka, manager of the UC Bookstore. "The Utica College Bookstore is trying to help students get the most for their education dollar by offering a range of textbook options. Book options such as rentals and digital textbooks are a great value and help students lower their educational expenses."
Since the fall of 2010, the UC Bookstore has offered textbook rentals to students. "These are the same texts that can be bought outright used and new, but a rental for the semester would cost 55 percent off the regular purchase price of a new textbook,” said Partyka.
The store also offers digital textbooks, which can either be purchased or rented by the semester. "Digital books are generally up to 60 percent off the price of a new printed version of the text," Partyka said. Special equipment isn’t required to read a digital textbook – just the free application NOOK Study (www.nookstudy.com/college) which can be downloaded onto any PC or Mac. Both rentals and digital books are available in the UC Bookstore on campus and online at www.utica.bncollege.com.
Partyka would like to remind students that the Cash for Books program officially begins Wednesday, May 4. While the bookstore will buy back unwanted books anytime, the best time is during finals. If a textbook is being reused next term, students can get up to 50 percent cash for those books.
“However,” cautions Partyka, “if you have a rented textbook don’t return it to the Cash for Books counter – return it to the rental counter within the store. Otherwise you may be charged for an unreturned textbook rental.”
The UC Bookstore is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The bookstore team can also be reached at bksutica@bncollege.com or 315-792-3197. For more information, visit the bookstore’s website at www.utica.bncollege.com or check out the UC Bookstore’s Facebook page where students can stay up to date about the bookstore promotions and specials.
