Winners of UC Regional Science Fair Announced

Utica, NY (03/26/2011) - The winners of the 33rd annual Utica College Regional Science Fair were announced this afternoon. Rachel DiCioccio of Clinton High School took home the senior grand champion trophy, along with a scholarship for two years half-tuition at Utica College and a chance to compete in the national competition. Her project was titled “Heads or Tails? The Regeneration of Planeria.”

The junior level champion was Finn Morrissey of Poland Central School for “Trout Mutts?”

Runner-up in the senior division went to Gabriel Broomfield, Poland Central School, for “Photovoltaic Efficiency.” Third place honors went to Sophia Atik, Clinton, for “Oil, where did you go?” and fourth place was awarded to Cody Johnson, Poland, for “Can Horse Manure Compost with Miracle Grow?”

In the junior division, second place was awarded to Neila Rekic and Katelyn Zaleski, JFK Middle School, for “Glow On!” followed by Ahmedina Mehmedovic, JFK, for “Drip, Drip, Drip.”

The fair is held each year in order to stimulate an active interest in science and engineering while providing an educational experience and public recognition to talented students. Two groups of students, junior high (7-8) and high school (9-12), from schools across Oneida County competed for the top prizes. Their projects were critiqued by a panel of more than 20 judges from various scientific backgrounds.

The participating schools were: Clinton Junior-Senior High School, Donovan Middle School, John F. Kennedy Middle School, New Hartford High School, Perry Junior High School, Poland Junior-Senior High School, Rome Catholic High School, Rome Free Academy, Strough Junior High School, Thomas R. Proctor High School and Whitesboro High School. Students in each age group entered their projects into one of three categories – physical science, natural science, or math/computer/engineering.

Individual divisional winners were:

Senior level, physical science:
• First – Claire Lashinger, Clinton;
• Second – Sean Rickard, Poland;
• Third – Katherine Stanton, Rome Catholic;
• Fourth - Kayla Emerson, Clinton.

Junior level, physical science:
• First – Neila Rekic and Katelyn Zaleski, JFK;
• Second – Suveer Desai, Perry Junior High;
• Third – Trinh Truong, JFK;
• Fourth – Ben Killian and Gennaro Durso, Donovan.

Senior level, natural science:
• First – Rachel DiCioccio, Clinton;
• Second – Cody Johnson, Poland;
• Third – Sophia Atik, Clinton;
• Fourth – MaryAnn Bulawa, RFA.

Junior level, natural science:
• First – Finn Morrissey, Poland;
• Second - Ahmedina Mehmedovic, JFK;
• Third – Emma Lalonde
• Fourth – Madison Cook, JFK.

Senior division, math/engineering/computer science:
• First – Gabriel Broomfield, Poland;
• Second – Andrew Jeselson, RFA;
• Third – Courtney Taber, Poland;
• Fourth - Carson Burt, Poland.

As the 2011 grand prize winner, DeCioccio will be eligible to compete at the 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, CA, from May 8-13. Participants received many special awards given by various organizations ranging from National Grid to the U.S. Army.
