Noted Author to Speak on Greek Jewish Culture
Ikonomopoulos to Speak at UC

Utica, NY (03/24/2011) - Scholar and activist of Greek Jewish culture Marcia Haddad Ikonomopoulos will speak Thursday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference Room in DePerno Hall at Utica College. Ikonomopoulos’ lecture, “Balkan Jews: Contrasts in Cultures,” will focus on how Jewish cultures differ throughout the Balkans.The author of several books on the Jewish culture, Ikonomopoulos also translated two Greek Jewish Holocaust memoirs. She has taught Judaic Studies since 1990 in various schools, and is the president of The Association of Friends of Greek Jewry, an organization that works to preserve and restore Jewish sites in Greece.
Ikonomopoulos helped coordinate a series of Holocaust lectures at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in October 2002 related to the Holocaust in Greece. She acts as a lobbyist with local municipalities in Greece and the Greek government for preservation and restoration of Greek Jewish sites.
Ikonomopoulos holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology from Brooklyn College and a bachelor’s degree in Greek with a minor in Italian from Queens College. She also earned a master’s degree in psychiatric casework from the New School for Social Research and a master’s degree in Italian from Queens College.
