Utica, NY (03/03/2011) - The Utica College Diversity Committee's “The Many Faces of Islam” series will come to a close on Tuesday, March 8, as Visiting Assistant Professor of History Sana Ghazi will give a presentation on women and Islam.

Ghazi earned a bachelor of arts in sociology, with distinction in research on human rights violations in war zones, from St. Xavier’s College of Mumbai University in 2006. She went on to the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom where she earned a master’s in international relations from the department of politics and international studies. While at Warwick, Ghazi’s research focuses included democratization, human rights, identity and minority studies, failed states, securitization and development.

In the presentation, which the diversity committee is co-sponsoring with the Womyn’s Resource Center in celebration of International Women’s Day, Ghazi will address the current realities and misperceptions of women’s roles in Islam. This will coincide with the overall goal of the series, which has been to provide attendees an opportunity to engage in spirited and thought-provoking discussions that will lead to a better understanding of people and cultures that may differ from their own.

The presentation will begin at 2:30 p.m. in 209 Hubbard Hall, and is free and open to all members of the community.
