Utica, NY (01/06/2011) - Several hundred people are wrapping up the holiday season with a trip to Utica as Utica College’s School of Online and Extended Studies will hold its winter residencies for graduate students beginning this week.

The first residency, for students enrolled in the online program for the master’s degree in Cybersecurity – Intelligence and Forensics, begins today (Jan. 6) and runs through Jan. 9. This highly specialized program provides professionals working in the field with an advanced knowledge base and hands-on experience in the areas of homeland security, law enforcement, private investigation, computer forensics, and cybercrime investigation.

“Residencies are an integral part of the Utica College online graduate programs ,” said Albert Orbinati, director of graduate online and non-traditional programs. “Students often select online programs for convenience, but the residencies provide the unique and powerful opportunity to collaborate face-to-face with expert faculty and peers, network, acquire new knowledge, and implement that knowledge in a different setting.” Students draw upon the academic and professional experiences of their faculty and peers, a factor that can help strengthen and maintain motivation so that they can continue moving toward their degree, Orbinati said.

The residency for UC’s transitional doctorate of physical therapy will take place Jan. 8 through 10. The curriculum of this doctorate program is designed to augment students’ current knowledge, gained through a traditional physical therapy education, with content that is now included in entry-level preparation, building on the skills, knowledge, and experience of practicing clinicians.

The college’s executive master’s of science in economic crime management, the only online graduate program of its kind in the Americas, will hold its residency on Jan. 13 and 14. This groundbreaking program combines the areas of management, technology, and analysis with a knowledge and understanding of economic crime from a global perspective, in order to prepare professionals to combat the growing security demands facing them in a post 9/11 global world.

The fourth residency is for students in the online economic crime and fraud management MBA program, which will be held on Jan. 17. This program is one of few in the nation that combines fraud management and business administration, availing professionals with the opportunity to advance their competencies in managing corporate and advanced technological resources to best combat financial crime.
