Utica, NY (11/09/2010) - The offices of Student Activities and International Education will host the annual International Student Day and Cultural Fair on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 12:30 p.m. in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge, Strebel Student Center, at Utica College.

The 13th annual ceremony “… celebrates and recognizes the contributions our international students have made to Utica College,” said Maureen Murphy, assistant director of student activities and organizer of the event. “We appreciate their presence on campus, and the diversity they bring to our community.”

The flags of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Finland, Nevis, Turkesmenistan, Russia and Cambodia will be presented and the anthems of these countries will be played. These flags will hang with others in the Strebel Student Center, representing all 26 nations that are part of the UC student body. Judith A. Kirkpatrick, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and Keron Alleyne, student senate president, will also address the group.

Some of UC's 76 international students are also expected to wear traditional dress and provide displays about international topics.

“We encourage people to attend because it's a very moving ceremony,” Murphy said. “Our international students are so proud of their heritage, but also so happy to be studying in the United States. They are not only appreciative of the Utica College community but of the entire Mohawk Valley.” The one-hour program is free and open to the public.
