Utica, NY (06/24/2010) - The Mohawk Valley Writing Project (MVWP) will hold workshops for teachers and writers this summer. The project is open to all teachers in the area that teach grades kindergarten through the college level. Mary Ann Janda, professor of English at Utica College and director of the program, said that the programs this year, while still open to teachers and writers alike, are geared more toward teachers.

The MWVP’s workshops this summer are: “Academic and Cultural Understanding of the ESL Student,” “Collaborative Practice for the Improvement of Student Writing,” “Visual Thinking Strategies,” “MVWP Utica Writing Marathon,” “Because Writing Matters,” “Historical Fiction: Historical Events Create Heroes,” “Avoiding Teacher Burn-out: Keeping the Spark in Your Teacher Life,” and “Young Writers’ Program.”

Those who attend the workshops will be able to interact with other teachers and writers, a benefit Janda said is the key to the project.

“You spend all your time in your classroom, and you spend very little time having a chance to talk with other teachers, and no time at all having a chance to talk with teachers from other schools,” Janda said. “So the summer institute brings people together…people who don’t really have a lot of contact with each other otherwise, and they get to talk about teaching.”

The deadline to register for these programs is Tuesday, June 29, and the fees for the workshops range from $30 to $75.
