UC to Host Special Olympics NY Opening Ceremonies Friday


More Than 1500 Athletes, Coaches Expected

Athletes to showcase talents this weekend

Utica, NY (06/01/2010) - More than 1,500 athletes and coaches from across the state will descend upon the Utica College campus this Friday for the opening ceremonies of the Special Olympics 2010 State Summer Games, the largest Special Olympics New York competition held annually.

The events will begin Friday (June 4) at 9 a.m. as area law enforcement officers will carry the “Flame of Hope” down Genesee Street from New Hartford Shopping Center to Utica City Hall on the final leg of the statewide law enforcement torch run leading up to the State Games. Opening ceremonies, including entertainment, the parade of athletes and the lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron will be held that night at 8 at Utica College’s Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.
Athletes will showcase their talents on Saturday, when competitions begin at various venues throughout Utica. UC will host aquatics and power lifting, MVCC – tennis and volleyball, SUNYIT -basketball, Pin-o-Rama Lanes - bowling, Valley Gymnastics - gymnastics, Proctor High School – athletics (track & field) and volleyball, Donovan Middle School – basketball, and the Parkway Recreation Center – basketball. The event will wrap up at 8 p.m. with closing ceremonies and a dance at UC’s Clark Athletic Center.

A cadre of volunteers from Utica College will assist the athletes as they move in to their weekend quarters in the college’s residence halls, and other representatives will continue to volunteer throughout the weekend.

Special Olympics New York is the largest program of its type in the United States, serving some 47,654 athletes with the support of more than 25,000 volunteers. To find out more about the State Summer Games, visit www.specialolympicsny.org.
