Utica College Building Receives Design Award

Economic Crime, Justice Studies Studies Building Recognized by AIA

Utica, NY (02/19/2010) - Utica College’s newest structural addition has garnered regional attention, as the Economic Crime and Justice Studies building received a 2009 merit award for design excellence from the American Institute of Architecture (AIA), Buffalo/Western New York chapter.

The building immediately stands out on the college’s campus because of its uniquely modern appearance, but it is every bit as educationally functional as it is visually appealing. Designed by the Cannon Design Firm of Buffalo, the 25,000-square-foot building, on which construction began in the fall of 2007, opened to students in January of 2009. It provides UC students the opportunity for cutting-edge research and hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art facility, as it features both meeting and instructional space, teaching and research laboratories for computer forensics, and secure evidence rooms, including a restricted access area built to Department of Defense standards.

But students are not the only ones who benefit from the building’s modernistic features. “We knew that we would be serving traditional students from the UC campus, but we also knew that we’d be serving the law enforcement community with seminars, and research opportunities, so the facility is very high-tech and flexible,” said Kim Lambert, executive assistant to the president of the college. Many areas such as lounges, classrooms and the auditorium were designed to accommodate students, faculty members and guests alike.
The two-story structure also houses both the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection (CIMIP) and the Economic Crime Institute (ECI) of Utica College, both of which have put a national spotlight on the college’s suite of economic crime and criminal justice education programs.

Currently, Utica College offers bachelor’s degrees in economic crime investigation and cybersecurity – information assurance, bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, an MBA in fraud management, MBA in professional accountancy, certificate in financial crimes investigation, as well as master’s degrees in economic crime management and criminal justice administration.
