Utica, NY (01/08/2010) - When most people think of physical therapy, they think of muscles and bones – not the heart and lungs. Dynamic speaker, teacher, health enthusiast and physical therapist Steven Tepper will speak to Utica College physical therapy doctoral students Monday (Jan. 11) about how their discipline involves the cardiopulmonary system.

The students, who are in town for a three-day residency for the doctorate in physical therapy program, will have to endure some cardiopulmonary training themselves, as Tepper has been known to practice what he preaches. The group includes some 45 students hailing from around the country, including Texas, Colorado, Hawaii, Michigan and Florida.

Coordinator of the transitional doctor of physical therapy program at the University of Montana and president of Rehab Essentials, Tepper also serves as an adjunct professor with Utica College. A former professor at both the University of Maryland and Shenandoah University, his fields of expertise include endurance testing, differential diagnosis of endurance impairments, and the effects exercise training has on disease or the prevention of disease. His professional highlights include serving as president of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), task force member on clinical practice guidelines for the APTA, recipient of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Sections Linda Crane Merit Award, University of Maryland Alumnus of the Year 2003, and Robert C. Bartlett Award for Innovation in Fundraising from the Foundation for Physical Therapy, 2005. He holds a bachelor's degree in physical therapy and a doctorate in experimental pathology from the University of Maryland.

Utica College has state-of-the-art research facilities for its health studies programs, including a sophisticated motion analysis lab. Students have the opportunity to engage in advanced research, under the supervision of experienced faculty with a broad range of expertise. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for licensure examination in the state of their choice.
