Utica, NY (12/10/2009) - The Utica College men’s hockey team is set to host the fifth annual New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday night as the Pioneers take on visiting Castleton State in a non conference contest at 7 p.m. Fans who bring a stuffed animal to the game will receive free admission and after the Pioneers score their first goal fans can throw their stuffed animals out onto the ice for collection by the players. The stuffed animals will be donated to local charities for distribution throughout the Mohawk Valley during the holiday season.Over the past four years the Pioneers have been able to donate 4,548 stuffed animals to local charities through this event.
“The New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss is one of the fans’ favorite games to attend,” said Head Coach Gary Heenan. “I am so glad that Utica College can be a part of such a great cause. To know that we are helping put smiles on these children’s faces; it’s a very rewarding experience for everyone involved.”
The Pioneers, who currently lead the nation averaging 2,750 fans in eight home contests, were able to collect 2,252 stuffed animals in a 7-1 win over Western New England last season and they hope to eclipse that mark this year.
UC is now 3-1 all-time in Teddy Bear Toss contests headed into Saturday’s match up against the Spartans.
The event is sponsored by New York Sash, a family-owned and operated home-improvement company based out of Whitesboro. Since 1989 they have been providing high quality products to the Mohawk Valley. This is the fourth year that they will be hosting the event in conjunction with Utica College hockey. For more information on New York Sash please visit www.newyorksash.com.
