Classic Drama Coming to Utica College Stage

William Inge’s Picnic to be Staged, Four Performances Presented

Utica, NY (10/20/2009) - Utica College will present William Inge’s award-winning play, Picnic, starting Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Strebel Auditorium. Performances will continue on Oct. 23 at 8 p.m., Oct. 24 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 25 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $7 for students (with student ID), $12 for seniors and $14 general admission.

Picnic, one of Inge’s most admired works, paints a portrait of a Middle America town in the 1950s. Far from the idealized existence of white picket fences and suburban bliss, Inge’s play explores the stifling existence of his characters. Unrequited love, remorse, jealousy and the fleeting utility of physical beauty are some of the themes explored as his characters struggle with the foibles of the times and the unrealized fulfillment of their lives.

The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Outer Circle Award, the New York Drama Critics Award, and a Donaldson Award. The movie adaptation in 1955 won two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a listing as one of the ten best films of 1955.
