Human Rights Expert to Speak at UC
Finnish Professor Recently Trained Iraqi Prison Officials

Renowned European human rights monitor to give public lecture, address classes, tour prisons

Utica, NY (10/12/2009) - This week, Utica College welcomes one the world’s foremost experts on human rights. Sonja Kurtén-Vartio, a lecturer at Yrkeshögskolan Novia (Abo Akademi University), Vasa, Finland, will visit campus as a guest of Theodore Orlin, Clark Professor of Human Rights Scholarship and Advocacy.Kurtén-Vartio will present a lecture titled “The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture: How it Works and What it Finds” on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies Building Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.
She will also speak to both criminal justice and human rights classes at the college, as well as visit local prisons.
Kurtén-Vartio is an expert member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment. In her role she regularly monitors European prisons and other detention centers. Recently, she has spent considerable time training Iraqi prison officials in Baghdad. She earned a doctorate in political science and holds a master’s degree in political science with a concentration in social policy from Abo Akademi University.
