Nexus Seminar: Lost in Translation

Bergmann to Discuss Translation of Literary Pieces

Utica, NY (09/14/2009) -     Professor Frank Bergmann will present a seminar Friday afternoon (Sept. 18) unveiling the truth behind the translations of some of history’s most famous literary pieces.
    The seminar, “Traduttore Traditore,” which means “the translator is a traitor” in Italian, will touch on how the beauty, eloquence, or meaning of a piece can be lost simply by changing the language in which it is written. Bergmann’s presentation will also focus on some of the best works translated, not falling into Croce’s dreaded idea of “faithful ugliness or faithless beauty.”
    Among the literature analyzed during Bergmann’s seminar are some English translations of the French poet Victor Hugo and the German poet Heinrich Heine. However, the highlight of the evening will belong to Rainer Maria Rilke, a poet some consider the greatest German writer in the modern era. Bergmann will take attendees on a wonderful journey using the English translations of Rilke’s work, including some of his own.
    Sponsored by the Nexus program at Utica College, the event is free to students, faculty, and the public. “Traduttore Traditore” will be presented in the Willard Conference Room, located in DePerno Hall at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served prior to the lecture.
