Utica, NY (06/17/2009) - Donald Rebovich, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection (CIMIP) of Utica College, testified today before a congressional subcommittee on identity theft.

Rebovich discussed landmark research that CIMIP has conducted, as well as offering recommendations on how to lessen the impact on victims of identity theft and related economic crimes.

"As a society, we must do everything possible to assist victims of identity theft. Research done by CIMIP has documented features of identity theft that can logically be transformed into suggestions for government policy change to help limit future identity theft victimizations and improve system treatment of victims," Rebovich said.

The hearing, “Identity Theft: A Victim’s Bill of Rights,” was on the agenda of the Information Policy, Census and National Archives Subcommittee, Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Utica College, a longtime leader in economic crime education, established CIMIP three years ago as a research collaborative dedicated to the study of identity management, information sharing, data protection, and the crimes of identity theft and identity fraud. Corporate, academic and government entities are members of CIMIP, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Marshals, FBI, Secret Service, ID Analytics, Triad Biometrics, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the University of Texas at Dallas.
