Utica, NY (04/23/2009) - The United States Justice Department reports that every single minute of every single day, a woman is raped in America. In 1991, the Clothesline Project was created in Massachusetts providing women a vehicle to express their emotions on these hate crimes. Women channel that emotion into creating unique and personalized shirts with names and sayings on them which express their particular experience. In organizations across the country, the Clothesline Project hopes to instill a sense of empowerment for victims and advocates.Since its founding, the Clothesline Project aims to bear witness to survivors, help with the healing process for those who are suffering, educate and raise awareness of the problem, and to provide a nationwide network of support for participants.
The Womyn’s Resource Center will present the Clothesline Project at Utica College on Monday, April 27 from 12 noon to 5 p.m. in the Strebel Lounge. Participants will have the opportunity to hang a uniquely designed t-shirt voicing their opposition to violence against women. T-shirts and paints will be provided.
“It is important to remind people that violence, especially against women, children and the LGBT community, does occur,” said Suhayl Santana, a junior at UC and the administrative intern at the Womyn’s Resource Center. “Women have the opportunity to create shirts in honor or remembrance of those women who are victims of sexual or domestic abuse.”
The Womyn's Resource Center’s goal is to empower women through education, mutual support, and growth. Staffed by students, the center provides reading resources, referrals, networking opportunities, and programs concerning women's issues.
Utica College and the Womyn’s Resource Center have hosted Clothesline Project for more than five years. For more information, contact Alane Varga, associate dean of students and adviser of the Womyn’s Resource Center, at avarga@utica.edu or (315) 792-3100.
