Utica, NY (03/27/2009) - UTICA, N.Y. (March 27, 2009) – Light bulbs will go off, water will flow, and food and plants will be tested on Saturday, March 28 in the Library Concourse at Utica College. The Regional Science Fair returns to the UC campus where local junior and senior high school students throughout the area will showcase their science exhibits in front of judges and the local community for a chance to earn scholarships, prizes, and recognition.

Last year, presentations included "Soil Testing for Lead with the ICP-OES" and "Does Tetris Make You Smarter?" This year, more than 50 projects have already been submitted by students from schools such as Clinton, Donovan and Rome Catholic. Dozens of judges from professional and educational backgrounds will analyze the student research to determine the winning projects. The goal of the fair is to engage local youth in the various science fields, provide an educational atmosphere, and to recognize local students for their hard work and dedication. This event takes the top projects from the smaller, school fairs and allows the students to compete for the highest honors.

“The Science Fair highlights the efforts of local school districts to achieve excellence in science and technology education,” said Larry Aaronson, professor of biology and fair director. “The intrinsic benefits to the students include confidence-building and the encouragement of their budding excitement about learning and participating in the scientific process.” Faculty members from Utica College work together to coordinate the event.

The science fair at UC is part of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. This consortium of events features more than 1,500 youth scientists participating from over 40 countries.

The event is sponsored by American Building Maintenance, ECR International, Pratt & Whitney - HMI Metal Powders, Rome Academy of Science, Oneida Research Services, and Bonide Products. Judging will take place throughout the morning and the public is welcome from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Fair honors will be determined at 3 p.m. The event is free.
