Utica, NY (03/04/2009) - America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk is one of the largest events of its kind; Utica College – host site of the event -- raises the most money of all the area colleges. On Saturday, March 7, the nationally-recognized event will attract thousands of walkers and runners from all over the state. Last year “Team UC” amassed 185 participants and raised nearly $12,900 in donations.
“We hope to match or exceed last year’s accomplishments in both the number of participants and the amount of money raised,” said Blaise Faggiano, head coach of the football team and one of the co-captains of Team UC this year. Other co-captains include Ed Lewandrowski, director of student account operations, and Charleen Sangiacomo, administrative assistant of student success.
In addition to faculty and staff, students who partake in the event on behalf of their on-campus organizations will also help raise money for Team UC. Some organizations planning to walk Saturday morning include the Asian Association, Phi Sigma Sigma, and WPNR. Nearly three quarters of the football team, or over 90 members, will also be helping to set up for or cleanup after the event.
“Utica College’s involvement is great,” said Jim Stasaitis, America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk event director. “Their cooperation when putting on the event is phenomenal.”
In addition to obtaining pledges, Team UC has raised money by selling memorabilia for the event, including shirts, pins, and paper hearts to dedicate to loved ones. The Heart Run and Walk features a 30K, 10-mile, 5-mile, and 3-mile run, as well as the popular 3-mile walk. Prior to the races, there will be the WIBX Heart Radiothon, the Health and Fitness Expo, and the WKTV Heart Telethon. All of the mentioned events take place in Utica College’s Harold T. Clark Jr. Athletic Center.
