Utica, NY (02/17/2009) - K. Della Ferguson, professor of health professions, has been named a fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE). She will be recognized later this month during a ceremony in Texas.

“In awarding this honor to Dr. Ferguson, we wish to acknowledge her many contributions to gerontology and geriatrics,” said Marilyn R. Gugliucci, president of AGHE, “…in particular, for three decades of distinguished service as a gerontological educator at Utica College.”

Todd Hutton, president of Utica College, explained that her achievement is also an honor for the Utica College community. “Professor Ferguson’s leadership in developing educational programs that serve the elderly has been outstanding,” Hutton said. “The ‘Infusing Cross-Culturing Aging Information into Allied Health Curriculum’ Summer Institute and UC’s Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program are but two examples of her tireless work on behalf of both elderly and diverse populations.”

An Omaha native, Ferguson earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and completed her doctoral degree at Kansas State University. She joined Utica College in 1978 as an assistant professor of psychology and is also the former dean of the School of Health Professions and Education. Judith Kirkpatrick, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty at UC, is gratified but not surprised by Ferguson’s latest honor. “In her decade of senior academic administration, Professor Ferguson has served Utica College with honor and distinction. She has also overseen a number of major projects in her division that have helped strengthen Utica College as a whole,” she said.

The AGHE is a national membership which unites educators and professionals in the gerontology field while demonstrating their concern for the well-being of aging adults. Fellows are chosen from scholars or educators who display positive leadership in the gerontology and geriatrics professions.

Ferguson and other fellows in gerontology and geriatrics education will be recognized during the 35th Annual Meeting of AGHE, which takes place from Feb. 26 to March 1, in San Antonio, TX. For more information about AGHE, visit www.aghe.org.
