Utica, NY (02/17/2009) - Utica College’s NEXUS Seminar Series will present a lecture titled The Rocky Road of Research: Golf, Antihistamines, and Prime Number Sequences on Friday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference Room, DePerno Hall. The event is free and open to the public. The talk will explore the ways academic researchers approach and execute their studies. Scientists and other scholars employ stringent methodologies and controls in the course of their research. Yet, even the well-controlled experimental designs can’t guarantee useful outcomes in research. Often null results materialize from research despite the best efforts of the researchers. These results are often not publishable.
Steven Specht, professor of psychology, and Brad Emmons, associate professor of mathematics, will lead the discussion about the intricacies and potential pitfalls of research methods. They will present several examples of research that yielded null results and explore what the implications of such results have in the way scholars approach their research in the academic world. Refreshments will be served. For more information about NEXUS, call (315) 792-3028.
