Helping Hands Visit UC


Trained Monkeys Assist People With Disabilities

Specially-trained Caprician monkeys demonstrate how they can help people with disabilities

Utica, NY (11/18/2008) - Utica College will have some special visitors on campus this week as part of the 2008-2009 Campus Theme, “Six Degrees of Connection, You, Utica College and Our Place in A Global Community.”

Helping Hands: Monkey Helpers for the Disabled, will visit UC on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. in Strebel Auditorium. Chi Chi, one of the monkey assistants, will demonstrate his assisting skills and Megan Talbert, chief operating officer of Helping Hands, will share information and stories about the program.

Helping Hands is a nonprofit company that serves quadriplegica and those who have serious spinal cord injuries or mobility impairments. The specially trained monkey helpers are dispatched at no cost to the persons with disabilities and their families to assist in daily activities and keep them company throughout the day.

In addition to providing aid at no cost, Helping Hands educates students and other young people through the Spinal Cord Injury Prevention Program (SCIPP). This group is targeted for the program is because most spinal cord injuries happen between the ages of 16 and 26.

This event, free and open to the public, is presented with special thanks to Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
