Utica, NY (09/10/2008) -

Utica College will welcome retired CEO and business leader Aaron Feuerstein to campus Wednesday, Sept. 17. Feuerstein will speak on “The Responsibilities of Business Leadership” at 7 p.m. in the Strebel Auditorium, Strebel Student Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Feuerstein is best remembered for his magnanimous decision in December 1995 to continue to pay the wages and benefits of his 1,400 employees following an explosion and fire that decimated the textile mill where they worked. And more amazingly, Feuerstein decided to rebuild the Massachusetts mill at a time when most mills had relocated to the South or closed and shipped the work overseas. Widely lauded for his actions, Feuerstein was honored by President Bill Clinton during his 1996 State of the Union address.

Charles Whalen, professor and director of business and economics at UC, noted that since the time of Feuerstein’s gesture of good will, the mill has faced new hurdles. “The company – known for its Polartec fabric – has had both successes and challenges. Feuerstein will address those and other challenges and responsibilities facing today’s business leaders,” he said.

The lecture, part of the Visiting Professionals Program of the School of Business and Justice Studies, is made possible by a grant from the Credit Bureau of Utica Fund, a donor-advised fund of The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Inc. The lecture is also part of the 2008-2009 campus theme, “Six Degrees of Connection: You, Utica College, and Our Place in A Global Community.”
