Utica, NY (05/20/2008) -Utica College Associate Professor of Economics Richard Fenner was awarded the Crisafulli Distinguished Teaching Award at the 59th Commencement of Utica College May 18.
Fenner joined the UC faculty in 1989. He earned an MBA from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in economics from Syracuse University. Fenner is the founder and director and of UC’s Mohawk Valley Center for Economic Education.
“It’s a great honor,” said Fenner. “Teaching is the primary mission of Utica College and to receive this award is a very gratifying experience.” Fenner said he was surprised to receive the award. “It’s nice to be recognized by my colleagues and students. Teaching is what I enjoy most at Utica College, and this is very important to me.” Fenner added, “There are many great teachers here at UC, and to be included in that group is a great honor.”
The Crisafulli award was instituted in 1974. It was named in honor of Dr. Virgil “Cris” Crisafulli, a founding faculty member of Utica College, who passed away earlier this year. The award is considered by many to be Utica College’s finest tribute to a faculty member. A total of 34 faculty members have received the award, which is presented at the commencement ceremony. Colleagues and students submit nominations; a selection committee makes its choice on the basis of demonstrated excellence over a period of at least five years.
