Utica, NY (04/24/2008) - For the first time, a cohort of Utica College students will become members of the international honor society in education, Kappa Delta Pi.

Sixty-eight students will be inducted into the prestigious society Saturday, May 3 at 11:30 a.m. in Strebel Center Auditorium at the college. The students were selected by education faculty at UC and Kappa Delta Pi, based on their outstanding academic performance.

“Utica College, now the 693rd installed chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, offers a comprehensive suite of programs for those wishing to become teachers," said Thomas Diana, Ph.D., assistant professor of education and the group’s advisor. "We are pleased to have the opportunity to officially recognize our students for their effort in such an academically demanding program," he said.

Just before the induction ceremony, UC’s undergraduate and graduate students in education will display their research and curriculum projects to area educators and members of the community in the Library Concourse from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
The showcase offers new and exciting ways to teach subject material across curriculum with an emphasis on bridging the gap between students and teachers.

Alicja Rieger, associate professor of education and showcase coordinator since 1999, said this is an opportunity for future and experienced educators to connect, share ideas and benefit from one another.

“Teachers are no longer isolated,” Rieger said. “They must be flexible, demonstrate competencies in many content areas and must collaborate with others.”

Seniors in the education and administration programs at UC will also have their professional portfolios on display.

Kappa Delta Pi was founded in 1911 to recognize excellence in education. It invites membership to those who uphold the ideals of fidelity to humanity, science, service and toil. The organization encourages high personal standards, scholarship, distinction in achievement, and positive contributions to education. Today, there are more than 50,000 members in more than 500 university, college, public school, and alumni chapters. The Society publishes three periodicals in education and sponsor conferences, workshops, and award programs each year, in addition to conducting a biennial Convocation.
