Utica, NY (04/03/2008) - Educator, author and artist Keith Howard will present his work “In the Garden of Eve: Artifacts of Creation” at the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery at Utica College Wednesday (April 9). The exhibit will feature works of art that represent a departure for Howard, a renowned expert in printmaking.

Howard serves as head of printmaking and research at the College of Imaging Arts and Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology and is the foremost authority on a printmaking method known as intaglio, where etches in plates are filled with ink and a high pressure roller extrudes the ink onto the paper. This method of printmaking dates back centuries. But Howard’s new endeavor couldn’t be more modern.

Howard’s works begin as digital photographs, which are then manipulated with the aid of computer software. The finished images then journey to other side of the world where Chinese artist Xiang Ming Lin creates faithful oil painting reproductions.

“The tradition of printmaking to create faithful reproductions of original paintings is reversed and become part of this new genre of global artisan workshop,” he said.

Howard will be at the UC campus on April 9 at 12:30 p.m. as part of UC’s “Meet the Artist” series and the Jackson Lunch Hour Series, which is held in the Library Concourse. It is free and open to the public.

The exhibit will be open until May 9, Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m.
