Utica, NY (03/25/2008) - It’s a chance to learn about everything from electromagnetic wavelength and its effect on silicon semiconductor solar cells to soil testing for lead. Young scientists from middle and high schools throughout the area will display their ideas and experiments at the 30th annual Utica College Regional Science Fair presented by Pratt & Whitney – HMI Metal Powders, a United Technologies Company, while competing for coveted awards and prizes.

The science fair will take place on Saturday, March 29 in the Library Concourse at Utica College. The public is invited to view the exhibits between 1 and 3 p.m.; there is no charge to attend. Grand champion prizes, runners up, and special awards in three categories – physical science, natural science, and math/computer/engineering -- will be presented at a banquet at 6 p.m. The winner of the grand prize receives a half-tuition scholarship to Utica College for his or her first two years of college.

The UC Regional Science Fair, featuring exhibits from students in grades seven through 12, was designed to stimulate an active interest in science and engineering while providing an educational experience and giving public recognition to talented students.

Nearly 60 judges from across scientific curricula and professions will critique the exhibits.
