Utica, NY (03/04/2008) - To some, camping outside during the heart of winter in Upstate New York may sound crazy, but to Alpha Omega Phi of Utica College, a little bit of lunacy in the name of a good cause makes a lot of sense.Working with the American Cancer Society, the fraternity members are camping behind Strebel Student Center, Utica College. The “brothers” are living out of a tent 24 hours a day from March 1 to 8 in hopes of raising over $1,000.
The fraternity’s idea for the Deep Freeze came from its graduate Chapter, Alpha Chi Rho, and the first Deep Freeze, which took place in the spring of 2000. Held during what happened to be the week that temperatures dropped to about -23 degrees, the brothers raised $1,000 with public support. Re-igniting the Deep Freeze week, the fraternity lead by Karl Grunenwald, chapter president, hopes to revitalize the chapter’s relationship with the community and raise funds for a most worthy cause.
