Utica, NY (03/03/2008) - Utica College Professor Tom Rossi is living proof of the advancements in heart bypass surgery techniques. Thanks to research by the American Heart Association, surgery for heart disease patients is safer and more effective than ever.
Associate Professor of Management, Rossi has a family history of heart disease. Last May 56 year-old Rossi had life-saving double bypass surgery. The professor will continue his recovery as honorary team captain of ‘Team UC’ for this year’s 5-mile Heart Run/Walk.

“I am anxious to take my place at the front of the starting line and look back at the ocean of humanity I will be leading. I know it will be a moving, heart-warming experience that I will never forget the rest of my life,” Rossi said. “I consider my involvement each year as a way of fighting back so that others may benefit.”

Moved by the spirit of benefiting others, the entire Utica College campus is once again joining the cause for its 11th year. Kicking off the events, ARAMARK donated all proceeds from its annual Valentine’s Day Premium Meal dinner to “Team UC”; Chef Art Langdon designed a heart healthy meal option for students, faculty, and staff. On Feb. 22, the men and women’s basketball teams hosted a Go-Red for Women event, inviting everyone to wear red in support of the fight against heart disease; those that wore red to the women’s and men’s games were admitted for free. The games also offered the opportunity to register for the walk. The men’s hockey team went red sporting new jerseys for their game on Feb. 23. The jerseys had hearts on them, and were auctioned off after the game, to benefit the American Heart Association.

Team UC shirts as well as heart and Go Red for Women pins are being sold on campus, all proceeds will go to the Heart Run/Walk. Registration forms for the walk are available at a number of offices around the campus. All of the events will culminate with the walk on March 8, hosted by Utica College.
