Utica, NY (12/04/2007) - Utica College’s student organizations and clubs will present a number of events as part of the “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence” campaign taking place through Dec. 10.

Several organizations and educational institutions across the country as well as internationally will be holding events in honor of the campaign, which originated from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute, sponsored by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership in 1991.

The campaign concludes on Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day. The week also highlights other important dates, including World AIDS Day (Dec. 1), while Dec. 6 marks the anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. All of the events are sponsored by UC’s Womyn’s Resource Center (WRC) with a number of clubs, organizations and offices co-sponsoring.

Upcoming events that are free and open to the public include:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 4: “In the Time of the Butterflies” at 6 p.m. in Willard Conference Room in DePerno Hall. The film was inspired by the true story of three sisters who sought to overthrow the government.

  •
  • Wednesday, Dec. 5: “Rent,” the 2005 adaptation of the Broadway musical, will be screened at 7 p.m. in Macfarlane Auditorium in DePerno Hall.

  •
  • Saturday, Dec. 8: Benefit for the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley’s Sexual and Domestic Violence Services at 7 p.m. in the Library Concourse, located on the lower level of the Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library. At the event, a number of keynote speakers will discuss issues of gender violence.

  •
  • Monday, Dec. 10: “Shake Hands With the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire,” at 7 p.m. in Macfarlane Auditorium in DePerno Hall. The documentary follows the Canadian Lieutenant General as he returned to Rwanda in 2004, 10 years after the genocide. Dr. Theodore S. Orlin, Clark Professor of Human Rights and Advocacy at UC, will present an introduction to the topic of genocide. As president of the International Human Rights Education Consortium (IHREC), Orlin is a leading human rights advocate. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

Throughout the week, the Womyn’s Resource Center is sponsoring a food and clothing drive for Emmaus House. Donations can be brought to the WRC on the ground floor of Hubbard Hall, room B-13.
