Utica, NY (08/23/2007) - Next week, Utica College will break two records, as it opens its doors to record numbers of freshmen and transfer students.

More than 500 freshmen will join some 250 transfer students as they begin their academic careers at UC, said Patrick Quinn, vice president of enrollment management.

On Monday (Aug. 27), the College will hold its 61st annual Convocation ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Harold T. Clark Jr. Athletic Center Gymnasium. This year’s keynote address will be given by Scott F. Healy, a 1969 graduate of Utica College and president of Scott Healy & Associates, an educational consulting firm.

UC’s Convocation is a formal ceremony that officially marks the beginning of the incoming students’ academic careers at the school. For the third year, students and faculty will march into the gymnasium while the bell atop Bell Hall tolls, signaling the beginning of the academic year. The 600-pound, century-old bronze bell was a gift to the college by alumnus and Associate Professor Emeritus of Accounting Randy Huta and his wife, Carol. This annual tradition of ringing the bell is repeated on the day of commencement to also mark the end of the academic year.

After earning a bachelor’s degree from UC, Healy earned a master’s from Syracuse University in 1972, and his doctor of education from Penn State University in 2000. For a number of years, he has served on the Presidential Scholarship Selection Committee for the Department of Education. In addition, he has worked on many other corporate scholarship selection committees associated through ETS and ACT. A featured educational speaker throughout the U.S. and in Europe, Healy has appeared on several national and regional television and radio programs including “The Today Show.” He has authored and co-authored many articles and books on various aspects of higher education. Healy also co-founded the Annapolis Institute, established in 1988, which has served more than 1,100 colleges and universities in the development and enhancement of their alumni, parent, and student volunteer programs in support of new student recruitment. In his career, he has been responsible for enrolling approximately 250,000 students into higher education.

Classes begin on Tuesday.
