Utica, NY (04/30/2007) - Some 9-, 10-, and 11-year olds will be going to college this week. It’s not the latest in early admission procedures; rather, it is an effort by educators to expose children to the college learning experience. A group of 20 students from Kernan Elementary School in Utica will visit Utica College on Wednesday (May 2) to see what it’s all about. Mary Drucker, assistant professor of education, said the Kernan students will arrive at about 11:30, have lunch in the campus dining hall, and then be paired with UC “buddies,” primarily students majoring in education and psychology – child life at the college.
The group will tour the Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library, a classroom, pool and athletic facilities, career services, and a room in one of the residence halls. They will also view the construction of F. Eugene Romano Hall, which will house laboratories and classrooms for physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, therapeutic recreation and health studies.
