Utica, NY (03/29/2007) - As college students enjoy many new freedoms, they are also faced with additional responsibilities. When undertaking “firsts,” such as renting an apartment or obtaining a credit card, students need to be aware of their legal rights.

On Tuesday, April 3, Utica College will host “Legal Rights and Responsibilities Facing College Students.” The Oneida County Bar Association, the Public Information and Education Committee, and the UC Alumni Association will sponsor the presentation.

Topics will include criminal law, your behavior to avoid jail by avoiding an arrest; credit cards, the effect of failing to pay your bills on time, and tips on avoiding bad credit to bankruptcy; student loans, how to help pay those loans now; as well as tenant rights, signing a lease, paying rent, not damaging the property, and what happens when you leave.

Moderators for the event include Donna J. Case, chief law clerk; David N. Hurd, US district court judge; and Elizabeth Snyder, Esq., National Alumni Council president.

There will be several speakers, including Oneida County Interim District Attorney Scott McNamara and UC’s Director of Financial Aid Anita Elliot.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference Room in DePerno Hall at UC. Refreshments will be available, courtesy of the UC Alumni Association.
