UC Announces Regional Science Fair Winners


29th Annual Fair Presented by Pratt & Whitney - HMI Metal Powders

Kendra Potasiewicz, Poland senior, takes top honors

Utica, NY (03/26/2007) - The ideas and experiments of the area’s budding young scientists were on display today at the 29th annual Utica College Regional Science Fair presented by Pratt & Whitney – HMI Metal Powders, a United Technologies Company.

The senior level grand champion of the fair is Kendra Potasiewicz of Poland Central School for “Spoofing the Sensors.” Senior runner-up grand champion is Katelyn Zatwarnicki from Whitesboro High School for “The Purple Project.” The junior grand champion is Timothy Davis from Donovan Middle School for “Effect of Temperature on Dissolved Oxygen Content Water.”

Dr. Gary S. Cieloszyk, a former Utican and a 1967 graduate of Utica College, was the evening’s keynote speaker. A physicist and retired director of research and development at Union Carbide Corporation who holds nearly a dozen patents, Cieloszyk spoke to the students about careers in science and the requirements necessary to achieve their goals.

Winners in the senior division, physical science, are: Faith Rickard, Poland Central School, first place; Luke Shields, Clinton, second; Deanna Zembrzuski, Poland, third; and Peter Yaworsky, Clinton, fourth.

Winners in the senior division, natural sciences, are: Katelyn Zatwarnicki, Whitesboro, first; Akhil Reddy, New Hartford, second; Jana Farell, Clinton, third; and Andrew Bering, Clinton, fourth.

Winners in the senior division, math/computer science/engineering, are: Kendra Potasiewicz, Poland, first; Andrea Uvanni, Rome Free Academy, second; and Joseph Stanton, Rome Catholic High, third.

Winners in the junior division, physical science, are: Timothy Davis, Donovan Middle School, first; and Gregory Jo, Clinton, second.

Winners in the junior division, natural science, are: Alexander Rudiak, Rome Catholic, first; Nicholas Spudie, Clinton, second; Tristan and Julian Bass-Krueger, Clinton, third; Amanda Sharron and Alyssa Devine, Clinton, fourth.

Winners in the junior division, math/computer science/engineering, are: Tom Eldredge, Westmoreland Middle School, first; Courtney Tabor, Poland, second; Marykate Graulich, Poland, third; Kevin Bering and Rae Rosebrook, Clinton, fourth.

The UC Regional Science Fair, featuring exhibits from students in grades seven through 12, is designed to stimulate an active interest in science and engineering while providing an educational experience and giving public recognition to talented students.
Nearly 60 judges from across scientific curricula and professions critiqued the exhibits.
