Utica, NY (02/12/2007) - A bus full of students and staff from Utica College will travel to Albany on Tuesday (Feb. 13) to have their voices heard. As part of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (cIcu) Independent Sector Student Lobby Day, members of the UC community will join together with other private colleges in the state as they meet with legislators to discuss additional financial aid support.
The state currently allows a maximum Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) award of $5,000 to students; however, college representatives will ask to raise the award to $6,000.
While in Albany, more than 30 UC students will learn about the legislative budget development process. Ken Kelly, vice president of student affairs and dean of students, said the event serves as a good educational experience for students.
“It’s an opportunity for students to interact with some legislators and to share their personal stories with them,” Kelly said.
The bus will depart from the Strebel Student Center Circle at 7:30 a.m. and return at approximately 5:30 p.m.
