Utica, NY (10/09/2006) - Area residents and visitors are invited to the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Arts Gallery at Utica College Sunday, Oct. 15, 3 to 5 p.m., for the opening reception of Celebrating Sculpture Space, LIGHT SOUND ACTION: Art and Technology. The multimedia exhibition features the works of 10 professional artists from the U.S. and abroad who have enjoyed two-month residencies at Sculpture Space, Utica’s international artist residency center, within the past five years. On view through Dec. 21, the show is one of eight exhibitions in the series Sculpture Central International that celebrates the 30th anniversary of Sculpture Space. Celebrating Sculpture Space LIGHT SOUND ACTION: Art and Technology is sponsored by Special Metals and BGM Supply, with additional support from The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, Inc., and Seifert Graphics.
“Each of the artists in the show uses technology as an integral aspect of his or her piece,” noted Sydney Waller, executive director of Sculpture Space and advisory curator to the show. “Technology-based art goes beyond function as a tool or medium and operates rather as a purveyor of information and as an emotional and intellectual instrument,” added Daniel Buckingham, professor of sculpture at Pratt at Munson-Williams-Proctor and artist curator of the exhibition. “The artists in this exhibition treat the broad range of technical media they employ as diverse languages to explore and construct new relationships between audience and art,” Buckingham said.
Buckingham will speak on A Sculptor’s Art and Travel on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Concourse just outside the gallery. Part of The Professor Harry F. and Ruth Jackson Lunch Hour Series at the college, the presentation is free and open to the public.
The ten artists in the show are: Kaoru Sakurai, Saitama-ken, Japan; Daniel Buckingham, Clayville; Peter Forbes, Syracuse; Ianthe Jackson, Long Island City; David McQueen and Joel Murphy, Brooklyn; David Bowen, Duluth, MN; Daniel Bruce, Philadelphia; Cristin Millett, State College, PA; and Allison Wiese, San Diego.
The Barrett Fine Arts Gallery is located in the Library Concourse at Utica College and is open Monday through Friday 1 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 1 to 4 p.m.
The public is also invited to visit the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute (MWPAI) in Utica, which will feature Substance and Light: Ten Sculptors with Camera Oct. 7 through Jan. 22, 2007. Admission is free to visit the MWPAI Museum. Both shows are part of Sculpture Central International, the series celebrating the 30th anniversary of Sculpture Space.
