Intellectual Honesty in Online Education
The UC catalogue states ... "Academic honesty is necessary for the free exchange of ideas. Utica College expects academic honesty from all students." But what about students taking online classes? How do we ensure the integrity of student work in online and distance education? How do we know if plagiarism or cheating is taking place? And what are some creative approaches to address this issue? All are invited to an open discussion on the topic of 'Intellectual Honesty in Online Education' on Friday, September 28th, from 12:30-2:00pm in the UC Training Room - IITS #367 (behind the Media Center in the basement of the library). To register, send an email to training@utica.edu or contact Rose Patterson (792-3447) or Jeffrey Wetherill (223-2503) for questions. Pizza and drinks provided.

Managing Your WebCT Course List
As most of you know, every section of every course at Utica College has a corresponding WebCT shell. In addition to Spring courses, we recently added WebCT shells for both Summer and Fall. We appreciate that keeping them organized and navigating between them can be challenging. To help you manage your course list more effectively, we have developed a Help Sheet. It will walk you through step-by-step on how to manage your courses, hiding those you don't want to see and placing them in order of preference. You can access "Managing Your WebCT Course List" at the following link: http://www.utica.edu/academic/iits/compuserservices/helpsheets.cfm
Please contact the Help Desk (792-3115) if you have any questions.

Online Best Practices
As part of our dedication toward academic excellence, UC has endorsed a series of standards for teaching and learning online and at a distance. You can view these "Best Practices" at the link below (see the Useful and Important Documents section). As a faculty member, you represent the 'face' of Utica College to your online and distance education students. They are looking for your active presence in the course, timely feedback to their assignments, discussion postings, and emailed communications, and for guidance in defining and creating an online environment that nurtures teaching and learning. We encourage you to review these documents as you build your WebCT 6 course for Spring.

4 No More!
Here at UC, we currently use a version of WebCT, called WebCT 4 (also called Campus Edition 4). Starting with Spring classes, we will all be moving to a new version of WebCT, called WebCT 6 (Campus Edition 6). The critical point - WebCT 4 will be no more; it will not be available for online instruction for Spring classes. That raises the question, "Will I be able to make a backup of my entire WebCT 4 course and upload it into my WebCT 6 shell" Unfortunately, no! You will need to build your WebCT 6 course from scratch. So please plan ahead. Look for the next "WebCT Minute" on Friday, October 20th.

Our hope is that this will answer some of your important questions and help you to be prepared to teach online with this newest version of WebCT. Look for the first 'WebCT Minute' next Friday, October 13th.
