Judge Virkler is a graduate of LeMoyne College, Syracuse, and holds a masters degree in business administration from Syracuse University. He began teaching at Utica College in 2001 and was named Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice in June, 2005. He was named Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice in 2011 and Criminal Justice Department Chair effective Jan. 1, 2012. He is the elected Town Justice of the Town of New Hartford and has served in that capacity since January, 2000. Judge Virkler serves as Chairman of Oneida County Probation Alternatives to Incarceration Board.
In 2006, Hon. James Tormey, Administrative Judge, 5th Judicial District, appointed Judge Virkler to the District’s Town & Village Courts Advisory Board. In Spring 2008, Judge James Murphy, District Supervising Judge, appointed Judge Virkler to the Peer Review Committee for the District, and in that capacity he served as Chairman of the District’s first Judicial review. In 2009, Judge Virkler was appointed by Judge Tormey to serve as mentoring judge for newly elected Justices in Oneida County. Judge Virkler is President of Oneida County Magistrate’s Association.
Effective January 2012, Prof. Virkler was named Chair of Criminal Justice and in July 2012, he was named Executive Director of Economic Crime and Justice Studies.
