Grolier Online provides encyclopedic style information in curriculum aligned databases. Included are: Encyclopedia Americana, Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, New Book of Knowledge as well as Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus and American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (4th edition).
Encyclopedia Americana offers the arts, society, geography, history, philosophy, religion, sports, science, and technology to assist with class work, homework, and research projects. Articles include links to further readings, a bibliography, selected full text articles, web page links, and links to related Encyclopedia Americana articles.
The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia includes concise articles on geography, history, government, language, literature, religion, technology, the arts and sciences featuring extensive media resources including photographs, videos, and interactive maps. Also included are an atlas and dictionary. Educators: articles can be grouped by lexile level and are aligned to standards.
The New Book of Knowledge is an easy to use reference designed for the K-12 audience. This database uses engaging graphics and age-appropriate text to motivate elementary and middle school students through the research process, including: educational games, activities, quizzes and more. The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) Online is the accepted authority on the history and development of the English language since 1150. OED Online is a guide to the meaning, history and pronunciation of over half a million words, both past and present.
OED traces the usage of words through 2.5 million quotations from a wide range of international English language sources, including classical literature, specialist periodicals, film scripts and cookbooks.
The OED Online covers words from across the English-speaking world, from North America to South Africa, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean. This historical dictionary offers etymological analysis, listings of variant spellings and shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet.
As a historical dictionary, OED entry structure is different from dictionary of current English. For each word:
- Groupings of senses (definitions) are in chronological order with the earliest meaning first
- Recently developed senses (definitions) are at the end of the entry
