Taken From A National Strategy to Encourage Productive Aging, by Dr. Helen Kerschner:

A Profile of Aging in the Dominican Republic
In many ways, the older population in the Dominican Republic is typical of a developing country.
  • The elderly make up a rapidly increasing segment of the population. By 2025 the population age 60 and over will have doubled.
  • Often poor and vulnerable, older Dominicans tend to be left behind as younger family members emigrate to urban areas or industrialized countries in search of education and employment.
  • The tradition of caring for an older person within the family unit is being eroded.
  • Typically, older people in the Dominican Republic lack adequate social security and pension coverage and therefore keep working until frail health prevents them from doing so.
On a positive note, older people in the Dominican Republic are blessed with fairly good health, remain active longer than their counterparts in many other countries, and traditionally don’t expect to retire.
