ECONOMIC CRIME MANAGEMENT
MASTER'S DEGREE

Utica College, in Utica, New York, USA, is the first college in the world to offer a master’s degree in economic crime management (ECM). Begun in 1999, the program is offered in a distance learning format, requiring students to be on campus for three residencies a year for two years. The curriculum focuses on fraud and risk management strategies, current economic crime challenges including money laundering and identity fraud, and applying innovative technological and analytical solutions. It has been designed to meet the growing security demands placed on experienced personnel in law enforcement, private corporations, government, and the military.

Curriculum

The curriculum focuses on fraud and risk management strategies, current economic crime challenges, and applying innovative technological and analytical solutions. It has been designed to meet the growing security demands placed on experienced personnel in law enforcement, private corporations, government, and the military in the post 9/11 global environment. The two-year program is fully integrated, so that the two courses that the students take each semester build on the courses they have completed. The curriculum, based on the four themes of management, technology, analytical methods, and economic crime, was developed in collaboration with experts in private industry, government, and law enforcement, and is continually updated to meet societal changes. The twelve integrated courses (36 credit hours) cover organizational theory and management, research methods, economic crime, legal issues, Internet and computer security, and fraud analysis. Students are required to complete a professional project or thesis as a capstone to their academic experience.

Distance Learning

The Economic Crime Management program’s distance learning format allows full time professionals to complete a master’s degree without having to relocate and/or take a leave of absence from their positions. Two courses are begun in each of the six residencies. The residencies provide an intensive learning experience (approximately 32 hours), which prepares the students to complete the courses on the Internet, using sophisticated learning software. The communication and discussion during the fourteen weeks following each residency are crucial to the learning process. Students are given access to online library resources, including LexisNexis™, and applications such as i2 Inc.’s Analyst’s Notebook, to provide them with the research tools necessary to advance their studies.
