National White Collar Crime Center Hosts Cyber Course at UC

Law Enforcement from Northeast US Attend Special Training

- Utica College is once again hosting a highly specialized cybersecurity course, “Intermediate Data Recovery and Analysis,” taught by the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C).

More than two dozen law enforcement officers from all over the Northeast are attending this invaluable course taught by NW3C experts. The officers, selected based on their current assignments within their agencies, qualified by taking one or more prerequisite courses.

Digital evidence is information that may be of value to an investigation that is stored on, received, or transmitted by an electronic device. The course, which combines the in-demand skills of economic crime investigation and cybersecurity, runs for seven hours each day. Taking place through this Friday, it covers how to retrieve data from digital media such as cell phones and laptops, and how to analyze the data once it is retrieved.

“These skills are now vital to today’s law enforcement teams,” said Ray Philo, professor of practice in criminal justice and director of UC’s Economic Crime and Cybersecurity Institute (ECCI). “Nearly every crime committed today has a digital component.”

The NW3C provides support for the prevention, investigation and prosecution of economic and high-tech crime through a combination of research, training and investigative support services. It has more than 4,000 member agencies in the U.S. as well as 15 other countries throughout the world.

UC’s cybersecurity program is designed to answer the increasing demand for cybersecurity experts with a suite of programs, including a bachelor’s degree that is available on-campus and online and an online masters degree, with three specialized concentrations in cybercrime investigations and insurance, information assurance and cybercrime investigation and forensics. Its Northeast Cyber Forensics Center is a fully functional computer forensics lab that offers cost-effective, high quality services for local, state and federal law enforcement, as well as corporate and private clients.

UC’s Economic Crime and Cybersecurity Institute was founded in 1988 to support the education and research in economic crime and information security while offering a reliable resource for innovative solutions to corporate, government and law enforcement entities. It also provides a national forum for the exchange of ideas on economic crime, cybersecurity and fraud management. The institute’s dynamic leadership and innovative ideas are drawn from its directors – executives who are experts in the prevention, detection and investigation of economic crime, cybercrime, cyber-terrorism and fraud.
