Utica, NY (10/06/2014)
- In celebration of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Utica College will waive the usual application fee for its campus-based and online bachelor’s and master’s Cybersecurity programs during the month of October.

In addition, the college will host a complimentary webinar, “Cold War II: Battling for Information Supremacy in the 21st Century” on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. EST. It will be presented by Austen Givens, author and expert on counterterrorism, emergency management and cybersecurity.

The second Cold War is here. Yesterday's nukes have become today's bytes. A cyber war is happening right now, every day, with countries like China, Russia, Iran, and the United States electronically attacking and counterattacking one another in attempts to steal data and destroy infrastructure. What does this mean for government agencies? What are the implications of Cold War II for businesses? This one-hour webinar will present answers to these and similar questions.

Givens is co-author of The Business of Counterterrorism: Public-Private Partnerships in Homeland Security (Peter Lang, May 2014), which highlights the increasingly powerful influence of businesses in functions ranging from disaster management to cybersecurity. His articles have appeared in “The International Journal of Critical Infrastructure Protection,” “The Journal of Strategic Security,” “Emergency Management Magazine” and “The Richmond Times-Dispatch.”

Givens has worked with the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and Virginia Fusion Center. He holds a master’s degree in homeland security and emergency preparedness from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is working toward his Ph.D. in public policy at King's College London. Givens studied international relations in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics at the University of Virginia.

Givens is also a professor of practice in cybersecurity at Utica College, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses on critical infrastructure protection, homeland security, counterterrorism, emergency management, cyber incident management, and network security.

Utica College was recently designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Education (CAE IA/CD) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The college has also earned designation as a National Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE) by the Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3).
