- The Pines Educational Institute of Southwest Florida and Utica College present “Better Eldercare: Strategies for Nurses,” a special webinar series for nurses in the eldercare field. Designed to improve care, reduce Medicare costs, and provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for nurses, the series will cover discuss advances in elder care.

The first webinar, “eMas: A New Approach to Recognizing Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) in Older Adults,” will take place on Wednesday, May 1 at 2 p.m.

eMas is a new approach in recognizing adverse drug reactions, using observational changes in older adults and identifying which medications – or combinations – may be responsible.

The presenter, Ronald Lucchino, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus of biology and former director of the Institute of Gerontology at Utica College. He serves on the board of directors for the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida. An expert in the biological aspects of aging, public health care policy for the elderly, and pharmacology/patho-physiology, he developed standards for higher education in gerontology and trains nursing home staff to increase their awareness of possible adverse drug reactions.

The webinar series will also focus on:
• Reducing inpatient hospitalizations and rehospitalizations
• Improving quality of life for nursing facility residents
• Understanding patients’ relationships and how to enhance them

Other webinars that will be offered include “Lewy Body Dementia: It Isn’t Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s Disease —What Everyone Needs to Know,” “Nursing Home Residents and Their Relationships: What Can You Do to Help,” “Managing Safety Concerns of the Elderly,” and “Reducing Hospital Readmissions from Skilled Nursing and Rehab Centers Related to Dehydration: It’s an Art and a Science.” Each webinar is presented by a professional in the field.

Each webinar has a fee of $40 that will cover the cost of webinar participation, materials and a certificate of completion awarding CEUs. Registration can be completed by visiting www.utica.edu/eldercare-reg.
