Answers

  1. I live in the residence halls. Who should I contact if I have trouble with online gaming?

If you are only having a problem with gaming, e-mail gaming@utica.edu with a description of the issue, or post it in the Utica College Gaming Forum for community-based support.

If you are having a problem with network access in general (dropped connections or no connection) then you should contact ResNet.

  2. My ping is abnormally high when I connect to off-campus game servers. What should I do?

To improve the gaming experience for on-campus students, Utica College has dedicated some bandwidth to online games. Special firewall rules allow the following games and applications to take advantage of the dedicated bandwidth:

    • Aion
    • Battlefield 3
    • Cabal Online
    • Call of Duty (all versions)
    • Combat Arms
    • Darkfall
    • Demigod
    • GameGuard
    • Garena
    • Heroes of Newerth
    • League of Legends
    • PlayStation Network
    • S4 League
    • Second Life
    • StarCraft II
    • Star Trek Online
    • Steam
    • TeamSpeak (versions 2 and 3)
    • Valve Software games (Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, etc.)
    • Ventrilo
    • World of Warcraft
    • Xbox Live

The games listed above should perform fairly well when played from the residence halls. If the game you are playing is in this list, make sure you are using the standard ports for the game (this information can usually be found online).

Note: You may also need to disable any firewall programs running on your computer, such as ZoneAlarm or PeerGuardian. If you still experience a problem, or the game you are playing is not in the list, please contact gaming@utica.edu.

  3. How can I get my game console to work online?

You must register your game console in order for it to work online from a residence hall. Instructions for registering your game console can be found on the ResNet website under the heading Game Console and Device Registration Information.

  4. Which games does UC host servers for?

Utica College currently hosts on-campus dedicated servers for the following games:

    • Counter-Strike 1.6
    • Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
    • Counter-Strike: Source
    • Left 4 Dead
    • Left 4 Dead 2
    • Team Fortress 2

  5. How can I connect to one of UC's Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2 servers from a lobby?

Start the game with the -console option and create a new lobby. While you are in your lobby, bring up the console using the tilde (~) key and enter the following:

    Left 4 Dead:
    mm_dedicated_force_servers 72.237.4.33:27015,72.237.4.33:27016,72.237.4.33:27017,72.237.4.33:27018

    Left 4 Dead 2:
    mm_dedicated_force_servers 72.237.4.35:27015,72.237.4.35:27016,72.237.4.35:27017,72.237.4.35:27018

When you start the game from the lobby, it should connect to one of the servers in the list you specified. The first available server in the list will be used to host your game. If you receive a message box saying that the game failed to find a server, then it is possible that all of the servers are full and you must try again later.

If you want to use the UC servers every time you play, then copy the appropriate command above and paste it into this file (create the file if it does not already exist):

    Left 4 Dead:
    C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg\autoexec.cfg

    Left 4 Dead 2:
    C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\left 4 dead 2\left4dead2\cfg\autoexec.cfg

If you wish to disable the forced server list for one game, simply create a lobby, open the in-game console, and enter mm_dedicated_force_servers without a list after it. If you no longer want the forced server list to be used at all, you should remove the command from your autoexec.cfg file.

Note: If you are a member of the UC Gaming Club's Steam Group, you can connect to one of the group's servers by using this command:

    Left 4 Dead:
    mm_dedicated_force_servers 72.237.4.33:27021,72.237.4.33:27022

    Left 4 Dead 2:
    mm_dedicated_force_servers 72.237.4.35:27019,72.237.4.35:27020

  6. How can I become a student admin on UC's game servers?

Simply complete the Student Admin Request Form to become a student admin on our game servers.

Note: You must log in to complete the form. This form requires the same username and password you use for your UC e-mail.

  7. Which UC computer labs have Steam installed?

Steam is installed on all PCs in labs 217 (Hubbard Hall) and L100 (Gannett Library Basement).

These computer labs may be reserved by Utica College faculty, staff, students, or student organizations for LAN parties, tournaments, or other gaming events. E-mail gaming@utica.edu for more information.

Note: A valid UC login is required to sign in to these PCs and use Steam.

  8. Which games are installed in the UC computer labs?

The following games are available in labs 217 and L100:

    • Counter-Strike 1.6
    • Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
    • Counter-Strike: Source
    • Day of Defeat
    • Day of Defeat: Source
    • Half-Life Deathmatch
    • Half-Life 2: Deathmatch
    • Left 4 Dead
    • Left 4 Dead 2
    • Team Fortress Classic
    • Team Fortress 2

  9. Can I use my own Steam account in the UC computer labs?

No. Using a personal Steam account on a lab PC is prohibited for the following reasons:

    • Using a Steam account other than the one configured on the PC will break the automatic login, and will make it impossible for other people to use Steam on that PC.

    • Using a personal Steam account will allow the user to install games which may not be included in the College's Steam license, and this is a violation of UC's agreement with Valve Software.

  10. Why am I having trouble downloading updates for World of Warcraft?

The Blizzard Downloader attempts to use the BitTorrent peer-to-peer protocol by default, and BitTorrent is blocked by the Utica College firewall. However, the Blizzard Downloader has a secondary method for downloading updates which does not use BitTorrent, and it will usually fall back to this method after it fails to connect using BitTorrent a few times. If you continue to experience problems, you can install a WoW update manually by downloading the patch from a mirror site. Please see the Blizzard Support article regarding file and patch mirror sites for more information:

  11. Can I use the Ventrilo client from the residence halls?

Yes. The default port required for the Ventrilo client is allowed through the Utica College firewall, so you should be able to connect to a server if it is using the default Ventrilo port. The default Ventrilo port number is 3784. If a server is not using the default port, then you will not be able to connect to it.

  12. Can I run a Ventrilo server from the residence halls?

No. Ventrilo clients will not be able to connect to your computer through the Utica College firewall.
