Q. What is my Utica College email address and how do I use it?
A. Your email address is typically your first initial, middle initial, and your last name. To get your email address username and password simply go to http://password.utica.edu. Follow the instructions on that page to obtain all your account information.
Q. I already have an email address I use everyday, why should I use my UC email too?
A. You need to check your UC email because your professors as well as campus offices, like Student Financial Services, will send important information to that email. Notices about campus events and activities will also get sent to you over email. This email address is also more reliable. Emails sent from your UC email to other UC email addresses will not get marked as Spam; so you can be sure that your instructor or advisor receives your email.
Q. How do I use the UC Computer Labs?
A. To use the Computer Labs you must login to each computer. You can obtain this login information by using http://password.utica.edu. More information about the computer labs is available on the computer lab page.
Q. What do I do if I ever forget the password for my campus accounts?
A. Forgetting your password isn't the end of the world. All you need to do is go to the UC password website to reset your password.
Q. What type of computer should I bring to college?
A. UC doesn't have any rules regarding what brand or style computer you bring to campus. We do have minimum specifications that the computer must meet in order to connect it to our campus Internet. The Residence Networking (ResNet) Office has complete information regarding specifications and recommendations on the ResNet page.
Q. Can I get on the Internet from my residence hall?
A. All residence halls have access to the Internet via UC's wired ethernet network. Additionally Burrstone House, and North and South Hall lounges have wireless available. View the ResNet page for complete information concerning Internet in the residence halls.
Q. What do I need to connect my computer to the Internet in the residence halls?
A. To connect you must have a computer with an Ethernet card installed and your own category 5 ethernet cable. Burrstone House does not have ethernet but instead has wireless Internet. Burrstone House residents must supply their own wireless card. More information is available on the ResNet "What Do I Need" page.
Q. Can I bring my own Wireless or networking equipment?
A. NO. Servers, access points, routers, switches, hubs, and other equipment are not permitted. Don't bring them to campus because they will not work with our network. See the ResNet page for more information.
Q. Where is wireless Internet available on campus?
A. Wireless is available in the academic buildings (Hubbard Hall, White Hall, Gordon Science Center, and Gannett Library) as well as most of the Strebel Student Center. Keep in mind that even though wireless is available in most places, it isn't always as easy to find a power outlet. If you plan on bringing a laptop to class you may want to buy a spare battery or two.
Q. Can I play online games or download music?
A. Yes, games using internet will work, but only during certain hours. In order to keep our network working properly for academic purposes we limit downloading and gaming. Music downloads are only allowed if they are legal, such as through iTunes. Gaming is allowed 8pm to 8am. Hours are subject to change.
Q. What technology services does UC provide to me?
A. There is a long list of services for students:
- All students have access to a small amount of storage on our campus file server. This can be used to easily save files on one computer and print them elsewhere. It is also a convenient location to backup important class work.
- UC provides 1000 pages of printing free from our Computer Labs. Only 2% of students need more than 1000 pages per academic year, more can be purchased for only 4 cents per page.
- A personalized online calendar is available to help you schedule events, meetings, parties, anything you want. These calendars can be shared so your friends can view them, or kept private.
- The Computer Help Desk is available to help with basic questions about campus technology or use of the computer labs. The Help Desk cannot fix students' personal computers due to liability reasons, but we will try to answer questions and give advice on how to fix problems.
- The ResNet office is available in the evenings to fix computer issues relating to connecting to the campus network or Internet.
- Access to your records (transcript, schedule, financial aid, etc.) online.
- Online and Distance Learning classes.
- Access to our Library Databases.
- 24x7 Toll Free Hotline for problems using online classes or other online resources: 1-866-264-1537
- ....and much more.
Q. Who can I contact if I need more help?
A. The UC Computer Help Desk is available from 8:30am to 5:00pm weekdays. They can answer most computer related questions or refer you to the proper person for specific questions. You can call us at (315) 792-3115. Many times all of our phone lines are busy. Leave a voicemail message, or email us at helpdesk@utica.edu and someone will get back to you.
