Saturday the 14th at 8pm until 2am, various UC services will be offline due to network maintenance. ANGEL Learning will be available at http://utica.angellearning.com. We're currently experiencing problems with one of our Novell servers and due to that issue the ability to logins to faculty/staff computers is intermittent.
This also affects any wireless computing, including Smart Carts and personal laptops connected to UC _Open.

Wireless has been repaired and we are currently in the process of replacing our failed server. For faculty or staff who cannot login we recommend trying to login using the workstation only checkbox checked. For users who need to print or access files, look for an email with instructions on how to change your computer's settings and try logging in again.

The server issue we experienced earlier today is major, and will take quite some time to repair. We do not have a schedule as of yet, but networking has all available staff working on this. Printing services and network storage for students remain unavailable at this time. We'll be fixing printing on a per lab basis, and will post notices here as printing becomes available in each area.

We have restored partial printing in the following areas: Lab 102 in the Strebel Student Center, All desktop computers in the main area of the Library, and Lab 360 in the basement of the Library.
Access to network G drive files has not been restored, nor has printing in other locations. Despite limited printing capability, users will not be able to print double sided printing. Print quotas will not be affected by inability to print on both sides.

Student access to network files has now been restored. Some files may have been lost in the recovery process. Users experiencing missing files can visit the Help Desk and provide information about what is missing so a more in depth recovery can be attempted.
Printing will continue to be limited to the three areas mentioned above until more extensive modifications can be made to all computer labs. Lab 217 in Hubbard, the Mac lab, can also print.

We are in the process of updating our security certificates for our email system. Upon going to our email website, or connecting with an email program, you will receive a security warning. In Internet Explorer, you'll have have to click "Continue to this site anyway (not recommended)". In Firefox you'll need to add a security exception. In most email programs you'll have to press Allow for your program to connect and receive mail. We hope to have all certificates updated soon.

Login pages for certain portions of the UC webpage are not appearing correctly and not showing an area to enter a username and password. Some browsers will allow you to login by clicking the "printable version" link at the bottom of the page you wish to login to. Login there, close the popup window, and refresh your browser. During our planned network upgrade please do not use printing services.
Although printing may still work for some offices DO NOT print unless your office previously arranged for special printing options during this network upgrade. Doing so will delay the upgrade process.

Due to the fact that a print job request was sent to a network printer during the planned 7-11 AM upgrade window, the upgrade process was corrupted.
IITS is now working to resolve this problem so the upgrade can continue.
Other than banner printing, DO NOT print unless IITS has specifically installed a printer in the past couple of days. Here is how you can tell if you have a special printer.
Look in your printer list. If you do not have a printer called delete me, your computer is not set up to print word, email, Internet, or any other non-Banner programs.
If your area needs the ability to print immediately, IITS can install a printer on one of the computers in your area. Once the upgrade is complete each user may have to restart their computer, but printing services will be restored.

SPSS will cause an error when opening it due to a licensing issue. We are working with the company to fix this. If you are using SPSS 16 and it was installed before July 1st, the license will allow you to continue using the program until the end of the month. By that date we will have a new code to enter into your computer to extend the licensing another year. Contact the help desk towards the end of the month to obtain this new code.

Our service provider (Level3) is having a major outage this morning. They had their fiber cut in two different places which led to our outage this morning. We have been able to redirect our outgoing internet traffic to go out the students’ network during this outage. You should now be able to browse the internet and send email.
However you will not be able to receive email nor will anyone on the internet be able to get to WebCT or the Utica College Web Site. We apologize for this outage and will send another email as soon as these services are available.

You can now long into webmail and read old messages. however, you may still experience problems sending mail. You will get an error "undefined" when you push send button. If you receive this message your email will not go through. You can copy and paste the text into your normal email program and save a draft of that message so you can save it later.

Warning to all Mac users. MacSweeper software is the first rogue cleaning tool discovered for the Mac OS. If you install this software and scan your computer it will "find" something wrong even if there isn't, and ask for you to buy the program so it can fix the problem. This application is not legitimate, do not install it.
Programs like this are called "Scareware". They're designed to trick people into thinking that they have security problems and that the only way to solve it is to buy the software. Up until now this has been a Windows only problem but that's not the case anymore. Be aware of programs like this and always get a professional opinion before installing any new unknown software.

We are currently experiencing problems receiving mail with local clients like Microsoft Outlook and Smartphones such as a Motorola Q. Depending on how your mail is setup, old messages will be available in your client, Microsoft Outlook, or via our website http://website mail.utica.edu http://website mail.utica.edu can be used by everyone to check for new messages. (your email username and password are not always the same as your Novell)
We are also temporarily experiencing difficulties sending mail to AOL, Yahoo, and some other carriers. We are working to resolve both issues.

Campus email should be operational. If you are still experiencing problems follow these steps
Desktop computer: close your email client and restart your computer, do not open your local email or webmail,for 10 minutes.. After 10 minutes are up try your email again. If you are still experiencing problems please contact the Help Desk.
SmartPhone: turn it off, if possible, for 15 minutes. If you cannot turn it off disable your automatic check mail feature for at least 15 minutes. Then try your email again.

The email system is back up and running. This includes your local and web email. There are two possibilities that could cause you to still experience an email problem.
1. A password issue. Email and Novell passwords are not always the same. If you cannot log into mail.utica.edu you will need to go to our password reset site, password.utica.edu to reset your password. If you can successfully log into mail.utica.edu your password is correct. Close your email. Wait 1 minute and try it again.
2. If you still have a problem there may be a setting on your computer we need to change. Contact the Help Desk so we can resolve that issue.

IITS will be performing system and network maintenance each Friday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
This Friday, July 27th, IITS will be performing maintenance on both the College website and the EZ-Proxy service. Maintenance on these systems will begin at 3:00 pm. While both services will be down starting at 3:00 pm, the outages will be intermittent between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm as upgrades are tested during that period.
In addition, IITS will also be performing maintenance on network switches and a number of UPS batteries connected to network equipment. Individuals in the Library will experience a brief interruption (30-60 seconds).

WebCT 6 and Java 6 are not 100% compatible. We are working with WebCT to resolve this issue. Right now we have 3 solutions
1. Use your add remove program to uninstall Java 1.6
2. If you are using a new computer, or do not want to revert back to an older version you can minimize the warning window. Then you should only see the warning screen once per session.
3. We've also created a work around for the Mozilla Firefox browser which stops the popup. View the helpsheet.

There are two known issues.
The chatroom function from inside a course does not work, but there is a work around.
If you would like to set up a chat session log into the main webct page, do not go into your class. You will see a list of courses and how many people are online in the lower right hand corner. Click on the class you are interested in.
The next window will allow you to select one or more people and send a chat invitation.
Second. Uploading files is more difficult. If you are using Java 6 you may only be able to upload one file at a time.

During our spring break IITS will be changing our Internet provider to improve our services and increase our bandwidth. This upgrade will begin on Tuesday March 13th at 5:00 PM and will continue through the weekend.

The Internet update announced last week has raised some questions. Here is an update on what has gone on.
In order to increase our bandwidth we had to change Internet Service providers. This process required us to update all of our online service such as the Internet, E-mail, Banner, and BannerWeb. Most Internet and email functions have been restored. You should be able to access Banner, BannerWeb, e-mail, webmail, and Webct6. If you are having difficulties with these services please contact the Help Desk.
We are currently working on the Spam Quarantine Manager. This services will be restored as soon as possible.

Some users are experiencing problems logging into our webmail system. There are a few possible causes/ solutions for this problem
First make sure your username and password are correct. If you are not sure of your username or password you can visit password.utica.edu to receive a new password.
Your computer may have spyware on it. Go to download.com and search for spybot search and destroy. Download this program, run the updates, scan your restart your computer.
If this does not work clear the cookies and cache from your browser, then close and re-launch your browser.

If the login screen flashes with no error message try the following. Try logging into webmail. If that fails open a new tab. Go to mail.utica.edu you should be logged into the webmail.

Due to the need for additional software in order to open the secured pdf documents the UC computer labs are unable to open these files. You will need to use a personal computer which allows you to install the necessary software.

This is an old issue that still cannot be resolved and has come up again. Anyone buying a PDF book, or other secure online PDF will have to use a personal computer to download and open the PDF files.

Please be aware that a new type of thumb drive (also known as a flash memory drive, or a USB memory key) is now being sold that does not work well in Utica College's computer labs. These drives are sold under a variety of brand names and sizes, and include a technology called U3. This U3 software attempts to allow users to install special software and settings on the thumb drive, but has not worked properly for some users. Presently we recommend users buy thumb drives which do not have this U3 software installed. Currently there is no way to remove or disable the U3 software from a drive. We will be testing this software and will attempt to make it more compatible with the computer labs for the future.

There have been email viruses spreading around the UC campus. Please be careful when opening attachments. Attachments can be dangerous even when they appear to come from somebody you know and trust. If you are not expecting an attachment call the person and ask if they did include an attachment in their message before you open it.

When you receive an e-mail stating that you have won a contest, the lottery, or anything similar, please do not believe it right away. Consider whether you have worked with the company or given your information to them before.
If you receive an email regarding your account with a certain company, most likely it is not real. Due to the high volume of scan e-mails, companies will most likely contact you via phone or written letter. Please be very careful when logging into your accounts online. Make sure you are not in an impostor's website.
If you have any doubts about any emails, feel free to call the Helpdesk or forward the email to the Helpdesk and ask us about it.

In the past few months IITS has installed new printers in the student computer labs. These new printers will print on both sides of the paper by default, students will have to change the print settings each time they want to override the default and print only single sided. Instructions to do this are posted in the labs, or students can ask for assistance in the Help Desk.
