EDU 111 – Introduction to Teaching

Becoming a teacher: ethical guidelines;
prevention of child abduction; alcohol,
tobacco, and drug abuse; safety education;
fire and arson prevention; current
issues. Graded on a pass/fail basis.

EDU 201 – Applied Educational Psychology

Cognitive processes, memory and concepts,
problem solving, creativity, moral
development, self-concept, behaviorism,
motivation, social learning, classroom
management, and exceptional students.
Twenty hours of field work required.

EDU 215 – Diversity, Disabilities, and Success
(3) F,S
Nature of students with full range of disabilities
and special health care needs.
Includes disabled, socioeconomically
disadvantaged, and English language
learners. Effect of disabilities and needs
on learning and behavior. Identifying
strengths, individualizing instruction,
collaboration, instructional strategies. 20
hours of fieldwork in high-needs schools
required.

EDU 218 – Curriculum and Instruction

theories; basic content areas; and interrelationships.

EDU 301 – Foundations of Literacy

EDU 312 – Practical Teaching Methodologies

EDU 314 – Children’s Literature

Survey of children’s and adolescent literature
with special emphasis on criteria
for book selection. Traces history of children’s
books, conducts an in-depth
appraisal of Newbery and Caldecott
Award winners, presents concept techniques
of bibliotheraphy. Taught on site
at Kernan or Martin Luther King, Jr.
Elementary School.

EDU 317 – Math/Science Methods: Birth-Childhood

Objectives, content, instructional materials,
activities, and theoretical principles
for teaching mathematics, science, and
technology use in pre-school through
grade six. Math, Science, and

EDU 321 – Foundations of American Education

Examination of American public education.
Includes organization, finance,
administration, curriculum, and current
issues. Professional portfolio.

EDU 325 – Assessment of Children and
Youth with Special Needs

Assessment process in special education:
observational assessment; norm-referenced
standardized tests; criterion-referenced
assessments, performance-based,
authentic, and portfolio assessment. 10
hours fieldwork required.

EDU 326 – Childhood Special Education Methods

EDU 475 – Student Teaching I

seminars and conferences required.
Includes discussions, written assignments,
and evaluations. Graded on a
pass/fail basis. Prerequisite: The preparation
course sequence in either Early
Childhood, Childhood, Middle
Childhood, Adolescence, Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages,
or Business and Marketing Education.
Corequisite: Education 476. Permission
of director required.

EDU 476 – Student Teaching II
(6) F,S
Supervised teaching experience in either
elementary or secondary schools with
seminars and conferences required.
Includes discussions, written assignments,
and evaluations. Graded on a
pass/fail basis. Prerequisite: The preparation
course sequence in either Early
Childhood, Childhood, Middle
Childhood, Adolescence, Teaching
English to Speakers of Other Languages,
or Business and Marketing Education.
Corequisite: Education 476. Permission
of director required.

EDU 477 – Mentored Internship I
(6) F,S
For students with a full-time teaching
position in the area of certification for a
minimum of eight weeks. Supervised
teaching experience with seminars and
conferences required. Includes discussions,
written assignments, and evaluations.
Prerequisites: All teacher education
requirements for student teaching
and certification requirements for New
York State Education Department.
Corequisites: Education 471; permission
of the director required.

EDU 478 –Mentored Internship II
(6) F,S
For students with a full-time teaching
position in the area of certification for a
minimum of eight weeks. Supervised
teaching experience with seminars and
conferences required. Includes discussions,
written assignments, and evaluations.
Prerequisite: Education 477.
Corequisites: Education 471; permission
of the director required.
